Topic:
Owning Your Experience: Talking about Mental Health In the Workplace

Abstract:
Your thoughts and your emotions affect your work, no matter how much you pretend that you can leave them at the door of your workplace. It’s easy to deny your own experience the importance it deserves, especially if it’s only inside your own head. But boxing it all away because you have “work to do” is like trying to run a marathon while carrying a labrador retriever. It doesn’t have to be that way. This talk will teach you how to frame your world in experiential language rather than clinical language, giving you a powerful tool to discuss your mental health in a way that can be easily understood – and won’t get you in trouble with HR. Sharing those experiences are the key that unlocks the true power of your team.

Speaker Bio:
Arthur Doler (or Art, take your pick) has been a software engineer for 18 years and has worked on things as exciting as analysis software for casinos and things as boring as banking websites. He is an advocate for talking openly about mental health and psychology in the technical world, and he spends a lot of time thinking about how we program and why we program, and about the tools, structures, cultures, and mental processes that help and hinder us from our ultimate goal of writing amazing things.

Topic:
Moving Massive Mountains of Magnificent Data

Abstract:
Data over here. Data over there. These days there are massive piles of data everywhere. Companies use many different systems. Those systems need to interact and share data to be useful. But how to get that data from place to place? Most of the time, what’s built in to these various systems doesn’t make it easy to move that data between them. Enter ETL. ETL stands for “extract, transform, load”. ETL systems make it easier to move and manipulate large amounts of data between various systems. Using examples from Azure Data Factory, we’ll gain an understanding of how ETL systems can make these complex interactions easier.

Speaker Bio:
Barret Blake is husband, father, gamer, Browns & Buckeyes fan, model railroader, board member of JavaScript&Friends conference. When I’m not doing all that other stuff, I also occasionally develop applications.

Topic:
Stand Back – I’m going to try Data Science!

Abstract:
Curious about data science and its relation to software engineering? Want to know how to dabble in artificial intelligence or machine learning side projects before taking the plunge? Come check out this session.

In this session I’ll highlight my own journey in layering data science skills on top of a software engineering background. I’ll teach you the terms, roles, languages, libraries, and technologies you’ll encounter and help you understand what aspects of math and programming are helpful in setting down this journey.

You’ll discover easy ways to get started with Python, R, and get connected to the data science community. I’ll show you how to discover public datasets and visualizations to help inspire your own journey. By the time the session is finished, you’ll know how to find out if data science is a good fit for you and how to take it to the next level if you discover you like it.

Speaker Bio:
Matt Eland is a software engineering instructor at Tech Elevator’s Columbus Ohio campus where he gets to raise up future developers and unleash them upon the world to do awesome things. Prior to this, Matt enjoyed a .NET and JavaScript-heavy career in the startup and Software as a Service world where he helped companies grow to maturity and then scale up.

In his spare time, Matt is pursuing a master’s degree studying data science and artificial intelligence and continues to build nerdy things on the side while looking for ways to share new things with the community.
